The municipality ( Freguesia ) Azinheira dos Barros e São Mamede do Sádão is located in Portugal about 20 km inland from the district capital Grândola on the old IP1 road, which connects Lisbon with the Algarve . The community was first mentioned in writing in 1513 and consists of the following localities:
- Lousal became famous for a pyrite mine. The mine, which closed 20 years ago, is now a museum. Along with the mine complex there is now a restaurant and hotel, as well as a local center for handicrafts and works of art.
- Azinheira dos Barros , formerly Bairros , has an area of 172.9 km² and 908 inhabitants (2001).
history
In the freguesia of Azinheira dos Barros e São Mamede do Sádão there are two of Portugal's many and often well-preserved Celtic places of worship and megalithic tombs , one on the hill "Monte das Boiças" and one on the hill "Monte do Lousal" .
