Carvalhal is a small village, which is about 3 kilometers from the Atlantic beach of the same name. It is located directly on a tributary of the Sado in whose valley rice is grown. The place seems a bit deserted in winter, but experiences even more holiday activity in midsummer. Carvalhal is a center for beach vacationers from Lisbon . It is not far from Tróia on the peninsula opposite Setúbal and belongs to the district of Grândola. Grândola is about 30 kilometers from Carvalhal. In November, the village celebrates the sweet potato festival , because in this area sweet potatoes are traditionally planted in the sandy soil. In addition, rice is grown on the large wetlands of the river.

history

The first inhabitants of the area around Carvalhal were the Celts in the Stone Age . They had founded various settlements along the Rio Sado and traces of their cult and burial sites reach far into the hinterland. The Roman Empire also left its mark on the area. The seaport and fish processing site of Cetóbriga on the Tróia peninsula should be mentioned here in particular . After the Christian conquest in the 12th century, the lands to the left of the Sado fell to the noble house of the Infantados.

It was not until 1836, following the liberal revolution in Portugal, that the area was freely sold and part of it went to the House of Espirito Santo. The name Carvalhal appears for the first time in a letter from 1890. In 1987 Carvalhal became an independent municipality in the Grândola district.
