The 0450 series is a two-part diesel multiple unit operated by the Portuguese state railway Comboios de Portugal (CP). It represents a modernization of the predecessor series 0400 and has been used primarily in local and regional traffic on Portuguese branch lines since 1999.

history

InterRegional train of the series 0450 in Livração station on the line between Porto and Régua

In the mid-nineties, the Portuguese State Railways decided to completely modernize the aging diesel multiple units of the 0400 series. Acquiring new vehicles would have been too expensive, and decommissioning was out of the question because there were too few electrified railway lines.

The modernization that took place between 1998 and 2001 in the EMEF plants in Guifões near Porto was fundamental. Basically, only the car body and the wheelsets from the previous series remained. The cars received new Cummins engines as well as new CONVEL brake systems and new vehicle fronts with renewed driver's cabs. The benches in the passenger compartment disappeared and were replaced by individual seats, and the EMEF installed air conditioning and audio-visual passenger information systems. Also noteworthy is the MICRA system ( Módulo Inteligente de Comando e Registo de Avarias ) designed by the EMEF , which is supposed to inform the driver more quickly about existing problems with the vehicle. The top speed could be increased to 120 km / h.

By 2001, all 19 double railcars could be modernized and thus go into operation.

commitment

Since 2011, two railcars have been in service as Intercidades trains between Beja and Casa Branco

Initially, the vehicles were mainly used in northern Portugal on the routes to Vigo ( Linha do Minho ), Braga ( Ramal de Braga ) and Pocinho ( Linha do Douro ) in regional and local transport. With the electrification of the Ramal de Braga in 2003/2004, the area of operation of the vehicles shifted to the south in the Coimbra area. Since then, the trains of the series take 0450 Interregional - and regional services on the Linha do Oeste , as well as to the setting of the operation on the Ramal da Figueira da Foz and Ramal de Lousã . On the one hand, the locomotive-hauled trains on the Linha do Oeste and some of the Allan railcars of the 0350 series disappeared . They are based in the Coimbra-B train station .

Since 2011, the CP subsidiary CP Regional has owned 17 additional class 0592 diesel multiple units on permanent loan from the Spanish Renfe Operadora . Since these are used in the north of Portugal, especially on the Linha do Douro, the CP housed some vehicles in the Algarve and the Alentejo . There they replace the aging trains of the 0600 series .

Since 2011, two railcars painted yellow and equipped with tables have been in use as Intercidades trains between Beja and Casa Branca , which connect to the electrified Intercidades traffic Évora — Casa Branca — Lisbon.
