The CP series 4000 are wide - gauge high-speed multiple units of the Portuguese railway company Comboios de Portugal equipped with tilting technology . They operate under the Alfa Pendular brand of CP Longo Curso .

In 1996, the Portuguese State Railways decided to equip the Alfa high-speed connection between the cities of Lisbon and Porto , which had previously been operated by locomotive-hauled passenger trains, with high-speed trains. A consortium of Fiat Ferroviaria (now Alstom ), Siemens Mobility and ADtranz (now Bombardier Transportation ) received the order for ten units . The cars were derived from the Italian ETR 460 and built in the Lisbon suburb of Amadora . On July 1, 1999, the first unit was put into service, making it the first high-speed train for the Iberian broad gauge of 1668 mm.

At first, the maximum speed of the train of 220 km / h could not be extended because the superstructure and substructure as well as the safety technology of the Linha do Norte were not designed for this. The trains therefore only ran at 160 km / h. Initially, the trains only ran between Lisbon-Santa Apolónia and Porto-Campanhã . The CP later extended this line to Braga and also set up a second line between Lisbon and Faro in the Algarve .
