geography
The village lies between the river Trancão and the wide delta of the Tagus .
history
The place got its name from the times of its Moorish occupation. Various theories explain it from the Arabic words budel (for broad passage ) or aboar (for divide or limit ).
King Dom Manuel I stayed here around 1500 , as there was no plague that caused him to flee Lisbon.
Until 1989 Bobadela belonged to the municipality of São João da Talha , before it became an independent administrative area. 1997 Bobadela was elevated to vila .
In 2013, Bobadela merged with the freguesias Santa Iria de Azóia and São João da Talha to form the União das Freguesias de Santa Iria de Azoia, São João da Talha e Bobadela.
Attractions
The old estate Quinta dos Remédios is a listed building.
The run-down, privately owned mansion of the Condes de Mendia was probably the home of King Dom Manuel I when he retired here before the plague in Lisbon. The municipal administration is seeking to acquire the building for the purpose of renovation, classification and establishment of a local industrial museum.
In the old residential area of the Petrogal there are some rare tree species in the park. From its elevated position there is a view of the Tagus River.
economy
The Tecnológico e Nuclear campus of the Instituto Superior Técnico , with its adjoining technology park, is partly located in the Bobadela area. His research reactor is unique in nuclear-free Portugal.
Petrogal, a Galp Energia company , has a number of facilities here. Tourist uses are planned for the partly abandoned old residential areas of the Petrogal.
Some industrial companies still exist here, but a number of formerly important regional companies have given up over the years, such as cork processing, furniture production, or metal processing ( wire rope ).
