The Serra do Buçaco (also Serra do Bussaco ) is a forested mountain range in central Portugal . A part (105 ha) is under nature protection as Mata Nacional do Buçaco ("National Forest of Bussaco"). In the course of Portuguese colonial history , the seafarers brought plants with them from the newly discovered countries, so that the forest, often referred to as the enchanted fairy-tale forest, criss-crossed by signposted hiking and walking trails with 300 exotic and 400 native species of trees and bushes, offers an unusual botanical mixture.

In 1628 the newly established Carmelite monastery, Convento de Santa Cruz do Buçaco, took over the preservation of the forest. Since 1653, the forest has been under the protection of the Pope, who threatened excommunication who felled a tree. Entering the monastery grounds including the forest by women was forbidden from 1622 by a papal decree. The Carmelites surrounded it by a 5.7 km long wall with ten gates.

In the forest there is a park-like area with a spring with water stairs, grottos and a pond as well as several chapels and prayer stations.

After the dissolution of the Portuguese monasteries at the end of the 19th century, King Carlos had a neo- Manueline summer palace built here, since 1905 today's Palácio Hotel do Buçaco .

From the spa town of Luso the Serra do Buçaco rises to 549 meters, but the Miradouro da Cruz Alta viewpoint is usually given as the summit.

Here was 1810 Battle of Buçaco place where the Napoleonic invasion army under Gen.Massená by a British-Portuguese army under Gen.Wellington was beaten.
