Life

De Almeida was a supporter of republican ideas even in his youth . As a medical student, he published the article " Braganza , the last" ( Bragança, o último ), with which he made fun of King Charles I , which earned him three months in prison. He later went to the colonies: first to Angola , then to São Tomé , where he practiced as a doctor.

He served between October 5, 1910 and September 3, 1911 as Minister of the Interior (Ministro do Interior) in the government of Prime Minister Teófilo Braga . On March 16, 1916, he took over the post of Prime Minister (Presidente do Ministério) as the successor to Afonso Costa himself and held this office until April 25, 1917, after which Afonso Costa was in turn his successor. In his cabinet he also held the post of Colonial Minister (Ministro das Colónias) between March 16, 1916 and April 25, 1917 .

On October 5, 1919, António José de Almeida dissolved João do Canto e Castro as President of Portugal . He held this office until his replacement by Manuel Teixeira Gomes on October 5, 1923. He was the only one of the presidents of the first Portuguese republic to hold a full term.

Almeida was a Freemason and was elected Grand Master in 1929, but could not take up the office due to serious illness.
