TeamSpeak ( short: TS or TS3 ; more rarely: TS5 ) is a proprietary voice conference software that enables users to communicate with each other over the Internet or a LAN using voice and text and to exchange files. TeamSpeak is optimized for use in parallel with online games .

TeamSpeak uses its own proprietary protocol, the specification of which has not been published. There is no support for other protocols.

TeamSpeak 1.5

Teamspeak 1.5 was released in October 2001. It was available as freeware and was the first version with a client-server architecture . The support has now been discontinued.

TeamSpeak 2

TeamSpeak 2 was written in Borland Delphi for Windows systems and ported to Linux with Kylix . For macOS there was only one unofficial client called TeamSpeex .

This version supported the codecs CELP , GSM and Speex in steps from 5.1 kbit / s up to 25.9 kbit / s. The client was basically free of charge. The server was also free of charge for non-commercial purposes. A maximum of 1,000 slots (places for users) were allowed to be divided between up to 10 servers. A paid license was required for commercial use. The support has now been discontinued.

TeamSpeak 3

The successor version TeamSpeak 3 uses C ++ , which simplified porting to other operating systems. In addition to the Windows and Linux version, there is also a version for Mac OS X. Versions for iOS and Android are available for a fee.

The first beta version of TeamSpeak 3 was released on December 19, 2009, the final version was released on August 10, 2011. TeamSpeak 3 supports the reading of entered text. In a conference call, the participants can be arranged in a virtual room (left, right, front, back), which should make it easier to follow the conversation. This works if you have two or more output channels. Skins are also available for users for personalization. Support for the low-latency codec CELT was also introduced. However, support for CELP and GSM has been discontinued. For CELT and Speex, latency (now unofficial) and quality can be configured independently of each other, resulting in bit rates between 2.6 and 114 kbit / s. Since client version 3.0.10, Opus can also be used, for which only the quality can be set.

The server software can be used free of charge for non-commercial purposes. By default it allows the creation of a single server with 32 slots. By registering for a free non-profit license (NPL), non-commercial organizations (e.g. computer game clans ) and private individuals could freely distribute up to 512 slots on 2 servers. Since November 10, 2012, it is necessary to provide an IPv4 address and to have an active website with its own domain to register an NPL. TeamSpeak 3 also has to pay a license fee for commercial use. Companies that operate servers for their own use pay for an AAL (Annual Activation License), an annual fee for a fixed combination of slots, which they can also distribute over 2 servers depending on their number. Both the annual and non-profit licenses allowed up to 10 servers prior to June 4, 2014. Companies that rent out servers pay a monthly slot-dependent license fee.

TeamSpeak 3's technology has been integrated into various products, e.g. B. in the military simulation America's Army 3 or Vendetta Online . TeamSpeak cooperates with Overwolf , which combines TeamSpeak 3 with functions similar to those of Xfire or the Steam Community .

TeamSpeak 3.1

TeamSpeak Update 3.1 was released on January 12, 2017.

The myTeamSpeak feature was introduced in this update. myTeamSpeak should, among other things, back up user data and simplify the restoration of data on other systems. The securable elements include TeamSpeak identities and favorite servers. MyTeamSpeak also manages badges and server nicknames. Server nicknames serve as aliases for connecting to TeamSpeak servers and can be used instead of an IP address or domain.

The entire plugin system was changed in Update 3.1, which meant that plugins from old versions could no longer be used.

TeamSpeak 5

On June 11, 2018 it was announced that a new TeamSpeak version with version number 5 has been in development since April 2018. It was planned that a closed beta for testing the client would be released at the end of 2018. After numerous delays, the trial version of the client was finally released on October 14, 2019. You could register in advance for access.

The developers offer access to a roadmap on Trello , which shows the next steps in development.

Features, changes and improvements

The most noticeable change is the redesigned user interface.

operating system

The client is officially offered for Windows, macOS and Linux. An app for iOS and Android can be purchased in the Apple Appstore and Google Play Store.

concept

In order to be able to communicate with one another, each user must connect to a server, which in turn can be divided into several channels.

server

Servers can either be rented from hosting providers (e.g. many providers of game servers ) for a mostly monthly fee or installed on their own server or computer using the server software. If you have a license, you can create several servers with the same installation of the server software. The server software can also be used on less powerful VServers .

Most of the settings of a single server are managed with a graphical user interface of the client. TeamSpeak 2 has a web interface on port 14534 for managing a server installation (called an instance) and some detailed settings, while TeamSpeak 3 can be used via Telnet on port 10011 by default. However, there are also web interfaces and software that can be used to graphically display the administration of TeamSpeak 3. When the server software is started for the first time, a server is automatically created on port 8767 (TeamSpeak 2) or 9987 (TeamSpeak 3).

Channel

All channels ("channels") of a server serve as independent rooms between which the client can switch. The channels are displayed as a tree view , similar to the folders in Windows Explorer. When a channel is joined, the client joins the conversation of the existing users. In TeamSpeak, a transmission is shown by a green (TeamSpeak 2) or blue (TeamSpeak 3) lamp in front of each client user name. By default, any number of users can communicate at the same time.

Client

Each user can connect to a server using the TeamSpeak client and the server address of the TeamSpeak server. Each client occupies an open slot on the server. A standard identity is generated when the TeamSpeak client is installed. A username and a phonetic username can be assigned to this identity . In addition, the client generates a unique ID. Using this unique ID, each client is identified on a server and entered in the user directory. Based on this identity, it is possible to retain certain rights on a server after the connection has been re-established. The identities can be saved in files and restored on other computers.

License model

The license types that can be used for Teamspeak are installed exclusively on the Teamspeak servers, so the license model for Teamspeak 3 & 5 is identical due to the same server versions.

After the reorganization of the Teamspeak license model, no further applications for ATHPs (Authorized Teamspeak Hosting Provider License) and non-profit licenses will be accepted. For end users, there is only the so-called "Gamer License", which uses the model of the previously offered AAL license. It is still possible to obtain Teamspeak servers from hosting providers who had already booked an ATHP license before the restructuring.

Functions

In addition to communication with other clients in the same channel or on the same server, TeamSpeak offers additional functions, some of which are also implemented in other VoIP programs. TeamSpeak can be expanded with designs and icons with the help of plug-ins .

To chat

Apart from language usage, it is possible to send server-wide, channel-wide and personal chat messages.

Whispers

In addition to normal speaking in TeamSpeak, there is also the whisper function (from "to whisper"). Communication then only takes place with the selected people.

Nudge

The nudge in TeamSpeak is a type of communication in order to draw attention to yourself, accompanied by a sound. It is mostly used to deliver a message to an absent user, which opens via a pop-up.

Rights system

The rights system in Teamspeak 3 contains a total of 5 levels. Each level of rights is overwritten by the next level if different rights are assigned there. The levels in TeamSpeak 3 include:

  1. Level: Server group rights
  2. Level: client rights
  3. Level: Channel rights
  4. Level: Channel group rights
  5. Level: Channel and client rights

For example, if a client is in the server group "Guest" and the server group has no rights to join a channel, this right can be overridden by a client-specific right.

In addition, the rights in Teamspeak 3 are made up of two groups of rights: the switching variables and the integer variables.
