Manuel Teixeira Gomes (born May 27, 1860 in Portimão , † October 18, 1941 in Bougie , Algeria ) was a Portuguese writer and politician. He was the seventh President of the First Portuguese Republic from October 6, 1923 to December 11, 1925.

Born and raised in a wealthy family in the Algarve , he began after his education in Seminário Maior de Coimbra a medicine -Studies at the University of Coimbra . However, he broke this off after a year to go to Lisbon and later to Porto, where he quickly found access to intellectual and artistic circles. First journalistic work emerged.

Starting in 1891, he traveled through Europe and North Africa for several years for his father's company, a distributor of dried figs , in order to open up new markets. His first novel was published in 1899. Teixeira Gomes is now considered one of the most important Portuguese writers of naturalism . His best known novel is Maria Adelaide (1938).

Teixeira Gomes also wrote for republican daily newspapers and began to be politically active in 1911 after the establishment of the First Republic . He was also the ambassador of Portugal in Great Britain in 1911 and in Spain in 1919. As an independent Republican , he was run as a candidate for the moderate Liberal Republican Party for the 1923 presidential election. He beat the former President Bernardino Machado , the candidate of the Partido Republicano Português . He had to resign because of a violent defamation campaign that Prime Minister António Maria da Silva waged against him.

He then moved to Oran in 1925 and from 1931 to Bougie in Algeria, and never returned to Portugal. But he always opposed the fascist regime of the Estado Novo , which had taken power in Portugal from the early 1930s.
