Burkhard Pape (born October 30, 1932 in Magdeburg ) is a former German football player and coach . After a short playing career, he coached national soccer teams from Asia, Africa and the Pacific for almost 40 years as a development worker.
Life
Pape learned the profession of electrician and was GDR junior decathlon champion in his early years. After the events of June 17, 1953, he was suspected of espionage and arrested. After his release he fled to the Federal Republic.
Career
As a player
In his career, Pape played for Hannover 96 , VfR Neumünster and FSV Frankfurt . He preferred the position on the right wing . From 1955 to 1957 he played 39 league games at Neumünster in the first-class soccer Oberliga Nord and scored five goals. He then attended the Sports University in Cologne in order to pass the trainer exam with Hennes Weisweiler in 1959 .
As a trainer
From 1959 to 1966 Burkhard Pape was the association trainer of the North Baden Football Association in Karlsruhe, based in the Schöneck sports school . In June and July 1961, Pape trained the Baden Amateur All-Stars, with whom he traveled through the northeastern United States and won five out of six games.
In 1966, Pape was commissioned by the federal government and the DFB to lead a long-term project as a football teacher in Sierra Leone, West Africa . In 1968 he became the coach of Uganda , with whom Pape won 41 of 70 games in office. In 1972 he left Uganda. Between 1975 and 1977 he coached the Egyptian national team as the successor to Dettmar Cramer .
Then Pape left Africa and coached some Asian and Pacific national teams such as Sri Lanka , Indonesia , Thailand , Papua New Guinea and Tuvalu .
In 2000 he returned to Africa to coach the Tanzanian national team in the Four Nation Castle Lager Cup .
Shortly after his return to Germany in 2003, he became the trainer of the C2 juniors and C juniors at SV Pullach . He's been training the B1 juniors for some time now.
Achievements & honors
His greatest successes include the four-time victory with Uganda in the East Africa Cup and the four-time victory with the U-18 national teams of Indonesia and Thailand in the Asia Cup.
On December 4, 1995, Pape received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his 30 years of work as a development aid worker in the soccer field .
