history

The new Hrodna Jewish cemetery has been located on the site of the sports complex since around 1800 . This was destroyed in 1951 by the Soviet authorities. In 1963 the construction of the stadium "Krasnaja Snamja" ( Belarusian Чырвоны сьцяг , Russian Красное знамя , German “Red Banner”) began with a capacity of 15,000 spectators . In 1993 the name was changed to “Njoman Stadium”. During the construction work as part of the renovations in 2002–2008, an excavator excavated bones of human remains from the former cemetery; they were disposed of in a landfill. Independent journalists made this known. After protests, the city administration promised to install a memorial plaque on the stadium. With the end of the work, the stadium capacity was reduced to 8,800 seats.
