Luton George Kieshawn Shelton (born November 11, 1985 in Kingston , † January 22, 2021 ) was a Jamaican football player. He is the record scorer for the Jamaican national team .

Career

society

From 2004 to 2006 Shelton played for Harbor View FC in the Jamaican capital Kingston . In 2006 he moved to Sweden to Helsingborgs IF , for which he scored 17 goals in 28 games and was able to win the Swedish Cup. In 2007 he made the leap into English professional football to Sheffield United . Here he could not convince, however, he only scored one goal in 28 games. In 2008 he finally signed a contract with Vålerenga from the Norwegian capital Oslo . At the beginning of 2009 he switched to the Danish champions Aalborg BK on loan , where the center forward was on goal hunting until the summer break. In 2010 he returned to his regular team at Vålerenga Oslo , and in 2011 he moved to the Turkish first division club Kardemir Karabükspor .

After one and a half seasons in Turkey, he moved to the Russian club Volga Nizhny Novgorod .

National team

For the Jamaican national soccer team Shelton played for the first time on October 22, 2004. In his 75 games he scored 35 goals, four of them in his second international match in a 12-0 win against Saint Martin and five in the two qualifying games for the 2010 World Cup against the Bahamas . He also starred in contingents of the Jamaican team at the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup and 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States . With his 28th international goal on January 31, 2010, he surpassed Onandi Lowe's record and has been the record scorer for the Jamaican national team ever since.

death

In 2017 Shelton was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) . He succumbed to the disease at the age of 35 in January 2021. He left behind his wife and three children.
