Ciudad Guayana is a city in the state of Bolívar in eastern Venezuela .

It is located on the southern bank of the Orinoco at the confluence with the Río Caroní . The city, which was officially founded in 1961, consists of the old town of San Félix and the new town of Puerto Ordaz, which are on both sides of the Caroni River. The city, whose expansion to a population of one million is planned, stretches 40 kilometers along the southern bank of the Orinoco. With nearly 800,000 inhabitants, it is a very large city by Venezuelan standards. It has one of the five main Venezuelan ports where most of the products made in the state of Bolivar are shipped to the Atlantic Ocean.

history

Ciudad Guayana was founded in 1961 as a project of the Corporación Venezolana de Guayana by uniting the two cities on both sides of the Caroní, namely San Félix and Puerto Ordaz, and building the bridge over the Río Caroní . Since then, many industries have settled in the city because its geographical location gives it many advantages. Since its inception, the city has grown from two small towns to the most important industrial center in the Guiana region. It is the center of the growth of an underpopulated region of Venezuela. There has been a lot of criticism for the design of the city of Puerto Ordaz, created by planners at MIT and Harvard in the early 1960s. On November 13, 2006, the second bridge over the Orinoco near Ciudad Guayana, the Puente Orinoquia , was inaugurated.
