Belgium got off to a good start in this European Championship. The vice European champions won the first group game against Yugoslavia 2-0 with goals from Vandenbergh and Grün, which made everything clear in the first half. In the second group game it was against the hosts France . It was a debacle against the eventual European champions. The Belgians went down 5-0 against Les Bleus. Man of the game was Michel Platini , who scored three goals. The last group game was about getting into the knockout phase. In the game against Denmark , the Belgians were able to pull away with goals from Vercauteren and Ceulemans 2-0 up to the 39th minute, but Danish Dynamite turned the game around and won 3-2. Preben Elkjær Larsen scored the decisive goal for the Danes in the 84th minute and thus the vice European champion of the 1980 European football championship was eliminated.
