Hermann Schmidt-Rimpler (born December 30, 1838 in Berlin , † September 23, 1915 in Halle ) was a German medic.

Schmidt-Rimpler studied medicine at the Friedrich Wilhelms Institute from 1857. 1863–64 he was an assistant doctor to Albrecht von Graefe . He took part in the campaigns in 1864 and 1866, returned to the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Institut at the end of 1866 as senior physician and in 1868 went to the Charité hospital as a medical officer , where he worked at the university clinic until Albrecht von Graefes' death. In 1870 he headed the department on an interim basis.

In 1871 he accepted a call as an associate professor at the Philipps University in Marburg an der Lahn , where he founded the University Clinic for Ophthalmology, became a full professor in 1873 and was rector in 1880/81 . In 1890 he went to Göttingen in the same position. From 1901 to 1909 he was director of the eye clinic at the United Friedrichs University in Halle-Wittenberg , where he was rector again in 1905/06.

In 1909 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

His grave is on Halle's Stadtgottesacker (inner field II).

He wrote some textbooks, e.g. B. "Augenheilkunde und Ophthalmoscopy" (Braunschweig 1885), which appeared in its fourth edition in 1889 and has been translated into several languages, and published numerous articles in specialist journals on refraction ratios and the relationships between diseases of the eye and those of the entire organism. In addition, he wrote:

  • "About glaucoma" (Leipz. 1875)
  • "The expression in eye and look" (Berl. 1876)
  • "University and Specialty" (March 1881)
  • "About being blind" (Bresl. 1882)
  • "School and Eye" (that. 1887)
  • "The school nearsightedness and its fight" (that. 1890) among others

His son Walter Schmidt-Rimpler was a professor for commercial, insurance and business law at the Universities of Breslau and Bonn.
