Grant Hanley (born November 20, 1991 in Dumfries ) is a Scottish football player . He is preferred as a defender , but can also play in defensive midfield . In August 2011 he was also used for the first time in the Scottish senior team .

Career

Blackburn Rovers

After Hanley had run through the youth teams of Queen of the South and Crewe Alexandra , he moved to the Scottish first division and traditional club Glasgow Rangers . From there he made the leap into the youth team of Premier League representatives Blackburn Rovers in 2008 .

Under coach Sam Allardyce he was used for the first time on the last day of the 2009/10 season in the game against Aston Villa (1-0). This prompted Hanley to extend his contract with the Rovers by five years in the summer of 2010. Despite his positive development, he could not prevail against the central defenders Christopher Samba and Ryan Nelsen in the following season and so came to seven league appearances, where he was only once on the field from the start. His first league goal was in March 2011 when he lost 3-2 to Fulham .

National team

Hanley was able to convince quickly in the U-19 national team of Scotland, so that he came to his first U21 assignment at the age of 18. He played his first game for Scotland's senior team on May 25, 2011 at the Nations Cup against Ireland (3-1).
