Matthew "Matt" Phillips (born March 13, 1991 in Aylesbury ) is a Scottish football player . In 2012 he also made his first appearance for the Scottish national team , although he was born in the British part of England .
Career
Wycombe Wanderers
Matt Phillips made his debut on April 26, 2008 for the English fourth division side Wycombe Wanderers in a 0-1 away defeat by Notts County . In the 2008/09 season, the 17-year-old established himself as a regular in the fourth division and achieved promotion to the third division with Wycombe as third in the table. Third from bottom of the Football League One 2009/10 , Phillips (36 league games / 5 goals) rose with his team directly back into the Football League Two .
Blackpool FC
On August 31, 2010 Matt Phillips moved to the English first division club FC Blackpool and made his first division debut just under a month later. In the 1: 2 home defeat against Blackburn Rovers , Phillips scored the next goal for his team in the 84th minute immediately after being substituted on. In total, he played 27 league games (2 hits) for Blackpool, but had to go to the second division at the end of the season as penultimate in the table. On October 14, 2011 Phillips moved on loan to third division club Sheffield United , where he scored five goals in six league games. After his return to Blackpool less than a month later, he developed into a top performer in the Football League Championship 2011/12 . On December 26, 2011, he managed a hat trick in the 3-1 away win over Barnsley FC . With his team he reached the play-off final at the end of the season, but lost this game 1: 2 against West Ham United . Matt Phillips was named Second Division PFA Team of the Year for his good performance .
National team
With the English national team, Phillips took part in the U-19 European Football Championship 2010 in France in July 2010 . In the third group game he scored the equalizer against the hosts in stoppage time, but failed in the subsequent semifinals with his team to Spain. In August 2011, he played four games at the U-20 World Cup in Colombia in 2011 , before losing to Nigeria in the round of 16 with England.
On May 26, 2012 Phillips made his debut in a 5-1 defeat in the USA for the Scottish national team .
