Robert Noehren

Robert Noehren (born December 16, 1910 in Buffalo , New York , † August 4, 2002 in Poway , San Diego County , California ) was an American organist, organ builder and music teacher.

In his long career as a concert organist, Noehren recorded more than 40 records and CDs . He was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of Bach's trio sonatas . In 1978 he was the first recipient of the American Guild of Organists awarded International Performer of the Year Award . His interest in historical organs led him to France, Germany and Holland. He started his own organ building company and built twenty large organs, including the one for the Cathedral of St. John in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

As a music teacher, Noehren was active at Davidson College and at the University of Michigan , where he was head of the organ department and university organist. A collection of his essays on organ building and the theory and practice of organ playing appeared under the title An Organist's Reader . The Hindemith student also made a name for himself as a composer .
