Samuel Luke "Sam" Johnstone (born March 25, 1993 in Preston ) is an English football goalkeeper who is under contract with the English club West Bromwich Albion .
Career
In the club
Sam Johnstone joined Manchester United Youth Academy in the 2010-11 season.
In July 2011, he was loaned to the Football League One club Oldham Athletic , as both the regular and the substitute goalkeeper had been canceled due to injuries. After two friendlies in the preparation for the season, the then 18-year-old was renounced. The loan was canceled and Johnstone loaned for four months to his home club Scunthorpe United , where he played twelve games as a goalkeeper during this time.
He then returned to the Manchester United youth academy , where he was promoted to the reserve team of the first team. For the 2012/13 season Johnstone was appointed to the club's first team as the third goalkeeper behind David de Gea and Anders Lindegaard . The reason was the loan from Ben Amos to Hull City , which was originally intended for this position. On March 20, 2013 he was loaned to FC Walsall until the end of the season.
At the beginning of the 2013-14 season, Johnstone was loaned to Yeovil Town for three months . Due to an injury, he was only able to play one game. On January 31, 2014, Johnstone was awarded to the Doncaster Rovers for four weeks . The loan was later extended until the end of the season. In Doncaster, Johnstone made 18 league appearances.
Johnstone returned to Manchester for the 2014/15 season and was fourth goalkeeper behind David de Gea, Anders Lindegaard and Ben Amos. On October 27, 2014, he returned to the Doncaster Rovers until January 3, 2015. At the beginning of January the loan was extended until January 28th. After nine appearances, Johnstone was loaned to Preston North End on January 12, 2015 until the end of the season . For the second half of the 2016/17 season , Johnstone joined Aston Villa on loan.
In the national team
Sam Johnstone made his debut for the England U-19 national team in September 2010 against the Slovak selection.
He also won the U-17 European Championship in 2010 with the English U-17 national team . At the tournament, Johnstone played in front of Jack Butland as a goalkeeper.
