Atıf Yılmaz

Atıf Yılmaz Batıbeki (born December 9, 1925 in Mersin , Turkey , † May 5, 2006 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish film director , screenwriter and film producer. He comes from a Kurdish family from Palu in the province of Elazığ .

Yılmaz was one of Turkey's most renowned directors. In 55 years he made almost 120 films.

After completing school in his hometown of Mersin, he first studied law at the University of Istanbul, later painting at the Academy of Fine Arts. His first film was made in 1951. He shot social and melodramas, provincial comedies or romantic comedies as well as popular epics. In many of his films he addressed the role of women in society. In his somewhat lesser known Turkish cult classic 'Bekle Dedim Gölgeye' (Wait, I told the shadow, 1990) he also thematized the time of the military dictatorship, as in 'Eylül Firtinasi' (September storm, 1999) and was one of the few Turkish directors who dealt with deal artistically with the topic.

Yılmaz influenced several generations of Turkish directors such as Zeki Ökten , Şerif Gören and Ali Özgentürk and Yılmaz Güney .

Yılmaz died at the age of 80. At his funeral were u. a. the Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and the Turkish Parliament President Bülent Arınç were present.
