action

The film begins with a court hearing. The accused Feyzo is on trial because he the Aga shot of the village. When asked about the motive for the crime, Feyzo recounts everything that has happened since his return from military service.

He wants to ask for Gülo's hand, he needs her father's permission to do so. Bilo, who is returning from military service at the same time, also wants to marry Gülo. Here the father senses his chance to get a high bride price for Gülo. Contrary to tradition, the father invites Feyzo and Bilo to his home at the same time to ask him for his daughter's hand. A usually devout tradition turns into a wild bazaar scene in which both opponents try to outbid each other. In the end, Feyzo emerges as the winner of this bridal trade, which Gülo is very happy about. Since this is a very large sum, the Hüso (Gülo's father) grants Feyzo to pay the bride's money in annuities and wants the Ağa to vouch for Feyzo. Should Feyzo fail to meet his payment obligation, Haci Hüso (Gülos' father) should still not go away empty-handed. When Feyzo asks the Ağa to stand up for a surety at Hüso's, he is sitting with guests over tea. Since the ağa wants to save face from his guests, he patronizingly agrees to vouch for Feyzo. To raise some of the money, Feyzo goes to town to work. During his time in the city he learned about the labor movement, its solidarity and the strikes. But what is even more important for him is the fact that there are no more bridal money in the city and that people can only marry by their own will.

Feyzo's intention to introduce these new urban ideals into his village always ends in chaos, beatings and banishment from the village by the Ağa. Since Feyzo still has debts to Hüso and the Ağa is obliged to guarantee these debts, he repeatedly lifts Feyzo's banishment so that he can return to the village and service his debts. In the end, Feyzo gets the whole village to emigrate. On the way, however, the Ağa and his people oppose them. After a tussle, Feyzo gets a rifle in his hand and shoots the Ağa.

Background information

In addition to the obvious criticism of feudal structures and long-standing traditions, the film also criticizes the strict laws for communists. In addition to the enlightening role attributed to the city's leftist currents, there is a concrete statement by Ağas as evidence of this criticism. In his anger he says: "Ula şurada 141 142 başsınız!" ( You are the reason for 141 142! ). This refers to sections 141 and 142 of the Criminal Code, which were used against communists at the time.
