Life
Childhood and youth
Kemal Sunal was born in Malatya on November 11, 1944. In Istanbul he attended the Vefa High School in Fatih . He then took courses in mass media radio, television and film at Marmara University , but was unable to continue his studies due to the political unrest in the country and the 1980 military coup . He graduated in 1995 at the age of 51.
Film career
He made his first acting experiences in the early 1970s in the theater (including in the play Zoraki Takip and later in the theater of Devekuşu Kabare ). In 1973 Sunal was discovered by the director Ertem Eğilmez ( Arzu Film ) and got his first supporting roles in his films. Kemal Sunal made his breakthrough as an actor in the successful film Hababam Sınıfı ( The Chaotic Class ) based on the novel by Rıfat Ilgaz , which had become a bestseller in Turkey. In Hababam Sinifi it comes to a class in high school at a private school whose students (all spoiled children of rich parents) already completely several times could not be moved to the next higher class, as they are to have at the school for anything, except to Learn. It is the funny story of a chaotic class that has no prospect of graduating from high school, but is not removed from school either because the director of the private school depends on the money of its rich parents. In addition, the class has won the hearts of most school employees, so that none of the employees has the heart to pull through the request for removal of the class or individual students from the school to the end. In this film, Sunal played the naive İnek Şaban (analogously Shaban, the cattle ).
This was followed by three sequels to the Hababam series and numerous other films. Among them are Köyden İndim Şehire ( I came from the village to the city ), Şabanoğlu Şaban ( Schaban, son of Schaban ), Tosun Paşa ( Tosun Pascha ), Süt Kardeşler ( The "Milk Siblings" ). The main character in these films is always called Şaban , after the first role in Hababam .
Between 1972 and 1999 he made a total of 84 films.
Kemal Sunal found recognition for his acting skills in 1977 with the award for Best Male Leading Role at the Antalya Film Festival in the film Kapıcılar Kralı ( King of Caretakers ). His films have turned from initially naive 70s comedies into increasingly socially critical comedies, but have been criticized for their frequent use of swear words and colloquial languages.
death
Kemal Sunal died on July 3, 2000 of a heart attack , which he suffered on the flight to Trabzon due to his fear of flying .
He left behind his wife and two children. His son Ali Sunal is also an actor and starred with his father in Propaganda , Sunal's last film before his death. Kemal Sunal is buried in the Zincirlikuyu Mezarlığı Cemetery in Istanbul .
