The PFK Kəpəz ( Russian ПФК Кяпаз / PFK Kjapas ) is an Azerbaijani football club from the city of Gəncə .

history

The club, which plays in blue and yellow, was founded in 1959 under the name Textilschtschik Kirowabad , when the city of Gəncə was still called Kirowabad. In 1962 the name was changed to Dinamo Kirowabad. In 1968 the club also played a season in the highest Soviet football league under this name , but then had to start relegation after only one season, beaten on the bottom of the table. In 1975 the club was renamed Progress Kirowabad, and in 1982 it was renamed Kjapas Kirowabad . In 1989 the city of Kirowabad got its old name back, so that one arose as Kjapas Gjandscha .

With the independence of Azerbaijan and the introduction of the Azerbaijani Latin script, the spelling of the club changed again to PFK Kəpəz . After the collapse of the Soviet Union , its soccer league was also dissolved, so that from 1992 on, the newly founded Azerbaijani soccer league was played. There, FK Gəncə won three championships, most recently in the 1998/99 season . In the 1997/98 season they even became undefeated champions. In addition, they won the Azerbaijani Cup four times .

In 2005 the club was renamed FK Gəncə against the opposition of the fans, in 2007 it was forced to relegate due to financial problems. For the 2010/11 season they returned to the first division, at the same time the renaming to the original name PFK Kəpəz was decided. The club plays its home games in the Şəhər Stadium (9,300 seats).
