action
The widowed Sicilian Matteo Scuro was abandoned during the summer holidays by his five now grown children, who live in different cities on the Italian mainland. Despite criticism from neighbors, he remains optimistic as his children are unable to attend because they are too busy in their responsible jobs.
Matteo decides to pay a surprise visit to each of his children. His journey by train takes him from south to north, via Naples, Rome, Florence, Milan and Turin. He finds his children different from what he had imagined, and each one has something of the opera characters after whom he named his children as an opera fan: Tosca after Puccini's Tosca , Canio after the Pagliacci by Leoncavallo, Norma after Bellini's Norma , Guglielmo after Rossini's Guglielmo Tell and Alvaro after Verdi's La forza del destino .
When he returned to Sicily, he visited his wife's grave and told her about the children: “Everyone is fine”.
