action

Astrophysicist Ed and his lover Amy Ryan kiss in a hotel room. He wants her to tell him her best-kept secret, which she refuses. Since it is getting late, Ed leaves the room and goes to the airport, hoping to see Amy again at his next meeting at her university.

A scene is later shown in which Amy meets Ed at one of his meetings six years earlier. She falls in love with Ed and the way he talks about astrophysics. Amy works as a stunt woman and has acted in scenes that would lead to the death of the character in the film. She stays in touch with Ed through video chat, emails, and packages that he sends her in any convenient situation. One day, Amy realizes that Ed doesn't answer her calls, but she still receives more emails from him. While reading the last mail, she notices a maple leaf on her window. After watching it for a moment, it flies away.

The next day, Amy attends Ed's conference, despite receiving a message from Ed to leave the place. As she now learns, Ed died a few days earlier in Edinburgh. She is shocked that she continues to receive messages from Ed's email account. Confused, she travels to Edinburgh and wants to see Ed at home. But she feels uncomfortable at the thought of seeing Ed's family. She receives an email asking her to see Ed's lawyer. The lawyer hands her a package with a video message in which Ed apologizes to her for leaving her alone. He couldn't bring himself to tell her that he was sick.

Back home, Amy decides to go to the same hotel where she and Ed spent the nights together. There she receives another package with one of Ed's clothes and a request to celebrate his birthday in his summer home in Italy. She travels to Italy, where she receives another package that includes a new laptop with another video. In this video, Ed is celebrating his birthday and he decides to give the laptop to Amy as a gift. She spends the rest of the time going to the places Ed suggested to her. Last night she received another video message in which Ed reveals to her that he knew about her darkest secret, an accident in which she was involved and in which her father died. Furious, she burns the video and sends an encrypted message (11 times the name "Amy") to prevent further messages from being received. Then she travels home again.

Amy later regrets the decision to prevent further messages and travels back to Edinburgh. She seeks out Ed's daughter, who is initially angry with her. After Amy cannot get any further information, Ed's lawyer tells her that Ed's last will was to hand over the various packages to her according to a predetermined plan. Back in Italy, she finds a secret message: draft video messages in which Ed tries to film himself while suffering from symptoms of a brain tumor. Meanwhile, Amy has decided to use the new laptop to film herself sending messages to Ed, describing details of the accident that killed her father.

One day thieves break into her house and steal her new laptop, among other things. Nevertheless, she finds Ed's old notebook with pencil marks from his last letter, and now she understands the encrypted message in order to resume correspondence. She sent the message and soon after received Ed's emails and packages helping her to resume her studies. She decides to face her trauma in a fake car accident in which she and her companion survive. Then she decides to concentrate fully on her studies. With the help of Ed's videos and messages, she is able to finish her thesis and complete her studies in astrophysics.

Amy receives a message from Ed to see his lawyer, who tells her that she inherited the summer home in Italy. She flies to Italy and receives a final message from Ed, in which he speaks of a mistake made by humanity that makes it impossible for them to be immortal. For him, the only mistake was not to have known Amy before, which is the last time he says goodbye to her.
