action

The Italian Giorgio lives on a small, lonely island in the Mediterranean Sea surrounded by the remains of an old German air force base. He makes a living by drawing caricatures. His only companion is his dog Melampo. One day, however, a young woman named Liza swims to the island from a yacht. She has just left her lover, the owner of the yacht. The next day she still doesn't want to go back to the yacht. The crew of the luxurious boat therefore unloads their things on the island.

Shortly after getting to know each other, Giorgio and Liza get closer. After he has brought her back on land, Liza is sure that she wants to live with him on the island. She lets herself be brought back to the island and happily falls into Giorgio's arms. However, she quickly developed a jealousy of the close relationship between Giorgio and his dog. When Liza kills her rival for Giorgio's favor by letting him swim to exhaustion and then drowning, she begins to wear a collar and fetch sticks like Melampo beforehand. She wants Giorgio's full attention and she likes being dominated by him.

Their strange coexistence comes to an abrupt end when Giorgio has to return to Paris for family reasons . He learned from his son that his wife had attempted suicide. Before Giorgio leaves the island for the mainland, he asks Liza to wait for him on the island. Shortly after his return to civilization, which he wanted to leave behind forever, Liza appears at his place and asks him to return to the island as her master immediately so that they can continue to live together as before. Although Giorgio's wife continues to appear unstable, Giorgio decides to live with Liza. After their return a storm rages on the island, which drives their boat with all the fishing equipment into the open sea. No longer able to feed themselves, Giorgio and Liza decide to leave the island again. To this end, Giorgio repairs an old aircraft at the base. However, it remains to be seen whether the plane can ultimately take off.
