The rabid one (original title: La belva col mitra ; Italian for "The beast with the machine gun") is a 1977 police scoop by the director Sergio Grieco who also wrote the screenplay. Helmut Berger , Marisa Mell and Richard Harrison can be seen in the leading roles . The role of Nanni Vitali embodied by Helmut Berger is based on the story of the Italian criminal Renato Vallanzasca . The film was also under the alternative title Du brutales Schwein! and The Wild One.
action
The cold-blooded murderer Nanni Vitali escapes from prison with three accomplices. Pursued by the hapless inspector Santini, who can only catch the driver of the getaway car, they leave a bloody trail that affects passers-by and police officers alike. Vitali wants revenge on the people who put him in prison. After the brutal murder of the witness Barbareschi, Vitali and his accomplices take the girl Giuliana with them after they have raped her; Nanni wants to start a new life with her after taking revenge on Barbareschi, whose testimony brought him to prison.
Giuliana, however, allies with Santini, who sets a trap for Vitali in which his cronies perish. Vitali kidnaps Santini's father and sister with a new accomplice. In an old factory, the police officer can catch the criminal and defeat him in a showdown.
criticism
- "The strip filmed by the veteran Sergio Grieco looks like a brutal comic strip ... Above all, Helmut Berger stands out, who evidently takes on his role and is really terrifying.
The film critic Christian Keßler writes: “Even the furious start makes it clear where the wind is blowing from: Helmut Berger is completely beside himself, the man is babbling madness! ... He has to be credited with the fact that you are really afraid of his figure; the least that can be said about his performance in this film is that it is convincing ... In fact, the film seems excessively devious. While the story runs solidly and conventionally over a large part of its criminalistic channels (very in the style of the Polizieschi), Grieco completely lets the pig out in the violence-processing sequences, a box devil with vampire teeth ”.
The lexicon of international film judges that the “staged sloppy film” reveals itself to be a “speculative piece of work full of cruelty played out with relish”.
MG said in “Il Resto del Carlino” that poor Visconti would not be satisfied that his former leading actor, the good actor Helmut Berger, had to deal with murder, rape, blood, hail of bullets and fights.
