Pierre Schœndœrffer (born May 5, 1928 in Chamalières , Puy-de-Dôme department , † March 14, 2012 in Clamart , Hauts-de-Seine department ) was a French director and writer of feature films and documentaries . Recurring motifs in his works are war, seafaring and the attempt of man to assert himself in an indifferent world.

Life

From 1947 to 1949 Schœndœrffer went to sea. In 1951 he became a cameraman of the French army in Indochina War and fell in the battle of Dien Bien Phu in captivity . After his release, he worked as a private war correspondent for some time .

Schœndœrffer's documentary 2. Company, 1. Platoon, Vietnam 1966 about American soldiers in the Vietnam War received the Oscar, the Prix Italia and the Emmy Award in 1968. The film La 317e Section won the 1965 Screenplay Award at the Cannes Film Festival. In his film Diên Biên Phú - Symphony of Fall , Schœndœrffer relentlessly recounts his experiences in the contested fortress. He wrote the script for this and directed it at the same time.

He had been a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts since 1988 and in 2007 held its presidential office, which is newly filled every year.

In 2003 he received the Prix ​​littéraire de l'armée de Terre - Erwan Bergot .

Pierre Schœndœrffer is the father of Frédéric Schœndœrffer and Ludovic Schœndœrffer .
