Diên Biên Phú - Symphony of Doom (alternative title: The Battle of Diên Biên Phú (1993), The Hell of Dien Bien Phu (2004)) is a French fictional film about the French Indochina War and the defeat of the French.

action

While the upscale French society indulges in its beautiful life in Hanoi , the Indochina War continues to come to a head. In the fortress of Dien Bien Phu , French and local soldiers are expanding it to repel the onslaught of the Viet Minh , as the French commander in chief General Henri Navarre had planned.

The film continues to tell how the French army defied the onslaught of the Viet Minh in vain during the 57-day battle. At the same time, the history of the population in Hanoi is portrayed, from the simple Vietnamese hoping for liberation to French settlers who fear Vietnam's independence.

The film ends with the surrender of the French armed forces under the command of Colonel Christian Marie Fernand Comte de La Croix de Castries .

background

Schoendoerffer was himself a veteran of the battle for Dien Bien Phu, who in this film outlines his experiences and the fate of the fighting armies. After the defeat of Dien Bien Phu, the French hegemony over Indochina ended and for the first time colonized peoples had successfully fought against their former masters. This defeat also heralded the looming end of French colonial policy worldwide, the climax of which was the loss of Algeria .

costs

The production cost of the film amounted to 30 million US dollars, the location was exclusively Vietnam.

Reviews

  • Fischer Film Almanach : “This director looks at Dien Bien Phu - nothing would be more understandable - with a magnifying glass. The viewer would have been better off to understand that this historic moment changed the fate of Asia, France, America and the whole world. "
  • film-dienst : "Even if some scenes seem to succumb to the fascination of the war and the suffering is not given an individual face, the film dispenses with any emotionalization and soberly describes the mechanics of the war."
