2nd Company, 1st Platoon, Vietnam 1966 , also known as Department Anderson (Original title: La Section Anderson ), is a French documentary from 1966 .

The film portrays a combat unit during the Vietnam War , led by a black commander, Lieutenant Joseph Anderson. Anderson, a graduate of the West Point Military Academy , is tasked with conquering a ridge 250 kilometers north of Saigon . The unit, which is characterized by great camaraderie and harmony, is brought to the region by helicopter. Under enemy fire, the soldiers make their way through fields, forests and over watercourses. During a break in the fight, one of the men is allowed to go to Saigon on leave. But the man has quickly spent his money and returns to the train.
When Anderson and his people reached a small village, he was ordered to continue. The wounded and dead are flown out in helicopters, the rest of the train continues the fight for the ridge.

Pierre Schoendoerffer, who had worked as a cameraman for the French army in the Indochina War , returned to Vietnam for six weeks to accompany the 33-strong platoon from August to October 1966.
The documentary premiered on French television in January 1967. It was first broadcast in Germany on July 15, 1968.

The lexicon of international films spoke of a "film that shows the everyday life of American soldiers in the Vietnam War in an unpathetic, sober and objective way".
The US Bishops' Conference USCCB certified that the film shows the fighting from a human perspective, where otherwise the fighting is glorified.
Awards
In 1968 the film was awarded the Oscar in the category Best Documentary . A year earlier he had already received the Prix Italia and the Emmy Award for Best Documentary.
