Pure Getz is a jazz album by Stan Getz . It was recorded as a quartet at two recording sessions in San Francisco and New York City in January and February 1981 and released on Concord Records in 1982 .

The album

After a brief phase of experiments with jazz rock and electronic sounds, Stan Getz developed the style that would dominate his late work in the late 1970s, the interpretation of standard material, especially the soulful ballads from the Great American Songbook . This development, which was to lead to his late albums Anniversary and Serenity , recorded in 1987 for Emarcy, is documented in his recordings for the Concord label, on which two studio and two live albums were made in 1981 and 1982. Stan Getz characterized his new formation as "a compact classical jazz quartet, one that is right for me, not the one that is designed to reach a wider audience or compete with the rock people."

In 1981 the saxophonist still worked with the pianist Lou Levy , the bassist Monty Budwig and the drummer Victor Lewis and appeared with this band in May 1981 at the Keystone Korner in San Francisco; the recordings were then released on the Concord albums The Dolphin and Spring Is Here . At the end of 1981 the pianist Jim McNeely joined Getz's quartet, as did the bass player Marc Johnson , who also played in a trio with McNeely. After a two-week engagement in the Stan Getz Room , located on the top floor of the Hyatt Union Square Hotel in San Francisco, the quartet recorded material for two albums at Coast Records Studio in January , including the Billy Strayhorn track . Another session took place in February 1982 in New York, where drummer Billy Hart stepped in for Victor Lewis ; he had played with Getz in the 1970s ( Live at Montmarte , 1977). The three tracks Very Early , I Wish I Knew and Come Rain or Come Shine were created in New York .

The selected material ranged from ballads such as Bill Evans ' Very Early , Mid tempo titles such as the Tin Pan Alley classic I Wish I Knew by Mack Gordon and swinging up tempo numbers such as Jim McNeely's composition On the Up and Up , with which the album begins. In addition, there were bebop standards like Charlie Parker's Sippin 'at Bells and Bud Powell's Tempus Fugit . Additional material from these two sessions in January and February 1981, such as the standards Spring Is Here , Easy Living or How Long Has This Been Going On, as well as the Marc Johnson composition Antigny , were featured on the album Blue Skies (Concord CCD 4676) in the mid-1990s. released.

Rating of the album

Richard Cook and Brian Morton rate the Concord sessions, which have appeared on Pure Getz and Blue Skies , in the Penguin Guide to Jazz with the highest rating of four stars and, with the Emarcy recordings from 1987, count them among the highlights of Stan Getz's late work . The authors particularly emphasize Getz's interpretation of Billy Strayhorn's composition Blood Count , which alternates between harsh screams and soft murmurs; His variations on Harold Arlen's Come Rain or Come Shine and Charlie Parker's Sippin'at Bells are also masterful .
