Dave Carpenter

Dave Carpenter (born November 4, 1959 in Dayton (Ohio) , † June 23, 2008 in Burbank (Los Angeles County) ) was an American jazz bassist.

Live and act

Carpenter studied music at Ohio State University and began his music career with Buddy Rich , Maynard Ferguson and Woody Herman . He also played in the Peter Erskine Trio and the Bill Holman Bigbands, as well as with Alan Pasqua , Bill Perkins , Jack Nimitz , Herb Geller , Herbie Hancock , Jack Sheldon , Al Jarreau , Bill Cunliffe , Jan Lundgren , Terry Gibbs , Buddy DeFranco and Richard Stoltzman . Carpenter was a sought-after session musician in Los Angeles clubs and studios; he has appeared on over two hundred recordings and numerous television and film soundtracks, including Tom Hanks ' That Thing You Do! (1996), Ocean's Eleven (2001), Sideways (2004), 50 First Dates (2004), Wild Things 2 (2004), Charlie Bartlett (2007) and When Do We Eat? (2008), also on the original recording of the Broadway musical Cabaret . Carpenter was a founding member of the Lounge Art Ensemble (with Bob Sheppard and Peter Erskine). The album Standards , recorded with Erskine and Pasqua, was nominated with a Grammy in 2009 in the category Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Solo Artist or Group . He died of a heart attack after a recording session with Simon Phillips and Peter Erskine.

Carpenter should not be confused with the rock bassist David J. Carpenter.
