Christian von Kaphengst (born November 22, 1966 in Mainz ) is a German producer , composer , arranger and electric and double bass player .

Career

At the age of six, von Kaphengst took classical piano lessons at the Peter Cornelius Conservatory in Mainz. From 1979 he was instructed on the classical double bass by Norbert Banz . From 1988 to 1995 von Kaphengst studied jazz double bass with Rainer Linke and instrumental pedagogy at the Cologne University of Music . During his studies he played as a bassist in various projects and bands - with Richie Cole , Allan Praskin , Peter Fessler and Albert Mangelsdorff , among others .

From 1990 to 1991 von Kaphengst was a member of the Federal Youth Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Peter Herbolzheimer . Together with Bruno Müller (guitar), Frank Lauber (saxophone) and Guido May (drums), he founded the band “Café du Sport” in 2000. The jazz quartet "Café du Sport" completed tours to India, Pakistan, Turkey and West Africa (Senegal, Benin, Togo, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria) and Cameroon on behalf of the Goethe Institute.

Since 1999 von Kaphengst has been a regular bassist for Patti Austin and New York Voices for European concerts. He is the musical director of the Jeff Cascaro band, the Frank Lauber band and the classical pop duo Marshall & Alexander and a permanent bassist in the Talking Jazz series with Till Brönner in Bonn.

He was artistic advisor for the Philharmonie Essen (jazz series in the RWE pavilion), the Ruhr Piano Festival 2008 ("Happy Birthday Paul Kuhn") and the Classic Open Air 2008 ("Till Brönner presents Classics of Jazz" on the Gendarmenmarkt ) active.

Christian von Kaphengst teaches at the Jazz Institute Berlin (University of the Arts Berlin / University of Music “Hanns Eisler” Berlin).

Von Kaphengst played with Randy Brecker , Nat Adderley , Mark Murphy , Roy Hargrove , Mark Soskin , Kenny Werner , Ack van Rooyen , Jiggs Whigham , Till Brönner, Joe Sample , James Carter , Gunter Hampel , Charlie Mariano , Jens Winther , Hiram Bullock , Toots Thielemans , Georgie Fame , Peter Eldridge , Peter Erskine , Dieter Reith and Bobby Shew . He also worked for Katja Ebstein , Xavier Naidoo , Roachford , Sylvia Vrethammar and Yvonne Catterfeld .

Christian von Kaphengst has also been active as a producer since 2002. He produced artists such as Charlie Mariano , Till Brönner , Helen Schneider and Torsten Goods .

Since 2017 he has been playing in the band Web Web with Roberto Di Gioia , Tony Lakatos and Peter Gall .

Von Kaphengst is the winner of Jugend musiziert (1986), Jugend jazzt (1988) and the Hennessy Jazz Search (2000).
