history
The local bailiff Helmut Viertl founded the Birdland jazz club in Burghausen in May 1968 , in the former Gasthof Zum bayerischen Löwen in the old town. He had previously founded a jazz club in Neuburg an der Donau. In the winter of 1969/70 Viertl presented the idea of a festival in the jazz club with Munich saxophonist Joe Viera as organizer (Viera also traveled across the country and presented jazz films). In order to attract more guests, they also wanted to present pop and blues. The first festival took place from March 3rd to 8th, 1970. Viera presented jazz films and at the final concert Viera performed with his band and Oskar Klein with his band, as well as the Romanian jazz pianist János Kőrössy , who soon emigrated to the USA. The final concert was broadcast several times on Radio Free Europe . Viertl soon afterwards left the jazz club in a dispute over the musical direction (which was closed in early 1971 when the lease was terminated, not least because drug use was suspected among the young audience) and founded the IG Jazz, with which he organized the next festival. The venue was now the Grübenbar. Another venue was the cellar of the city hall and the Mautnerschloss (after its renovation in 1977).
Well-known German jazz musicians such as Albert Mangelsdorff and Peter Herbolzheimer performed. Viera also organized jazz courses in Burghausen. In 1975 the festival also received international star guests ( Dollar Brand , Oscar Peterson , Joe Pass ). In 1976 the festival became even more popular when Chet Baker (replacing Dexter Gordon , who was absent due to illness) was arrested there before his performance and was held in the local police cell pending bail. He was on a wanted man for drug offenses in Germany, which had not yet led to any problems when he appeared in Hamburg at the beginning of the year. Also in 1976 the Dutch Swing College Band , Papa Bue's Viking Jazzband and the Old Metropolitan Band performed . In 1977, Benny Waters on 1978 Dizzy Gillespie , 1979 Horace Silver and the Art Ensemble of Chicago , 1980 Stephane Grappelli , McCoy Tyner , Max Roach and Mel Lewis , 1981 Clark Terry , Stan Getz and Ron Carter , 1982 Randy Brecker , Ray Brown , Bobby Hutcherson , 1983 Lester Bowie , Baden Powell , Benny Golson and Art Farmer . The festival has been regularly recorded by Bavarian television since 1982. In 1984 they moved from the Mautner Castle to the Wackerhalle, as it could hold more listeners. At the end of the 1980s, it was decided to also cast international stars at the opening concert - previously reserved for regional musicians. Dave Brubeck performed in 1988, the Modern Jazz Quartet in 1990 , Al Di Meola in 1992 , Jim Hall in 1993 and BB King in 1994 . At the 25th anniversary in 1994, Helmut Viertl handed over management to his previous deputy Herbert Hebertinger. Joe Viera continued to be the artistic director. The date was moved from the second half of March to early May in 2000 and to mid-April in 2005. After Hebertinger's death in 2004, Herbert Rißel (previously responsible for sound engineering) took over. A young talent award was presented from 2009. For the 40th anniversary in 2009, around 8500 visitors came to the concerts.

Street of Fame
In 2001 the city of Burghausen set up a so-called Street of Fame on In den Grüben , in order to honor selected jazz musicians who have already been guests in Burghausen. Rectangular relief panels are embedded in the sidewalk, each bearing the name, the dates and the signature of the recipient. The Street of Fame runs between medieval houses: a contrast that was definitely intended by the initiators.

- ^ The story in the following is mainly based on Robert Piffer, 40 years jazz week Burghausen, 2009. On the Birdland Jazzclub Master's thesis by Simmeth.
- ↑ On the one hand there was tension between members who preferred traditional jazz and those like Viertl who preferred modern jazz, on the other hand younger members (pupils, apprentices, students) pushed for more pop, rock, soul and blues. There was already a free jazz concert in August 1968. In 1969 there was a well-attended pop and blues festival in the jazz club.
