Salim Javaid (* 1991 in Sokolov ) is a Czech saxophonist ( soprano , alto , tenor and baritone saxophone ) of new improvisation music , new music and free jazz .

Javaid comes from a Czech-Pakistani family and grew up in Soest . He learned the recorder during elementary school before switching to the alto saxophone as the main instrument. During his youth he played in different contexts from classical saxophone ensembles to rock 'n' roll bands to big bands , jazz bands and experimental ensembles in the field of free jazz with influences from rock and metal .

Javaid completed his bachelor's and master's degree in jazz saxophone at the Cologne University of Music and Dance with Roger Hanschel and Frank Gratkowski and then began studying classical saxophone with Sebastian Pottmeier there, as well as studying for a master’s degree in instrumental new music with Barbara Maurer at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. In addition, he received lessons in contemporary chamber music from Paulo Alvares and David Smeyers as well as composition lessons from Siegfried Koepf during his studies at the Cologne Music Academy .

He was a member of the State Youth Jazz Orchestra of North Rhine-Westphalia, won the European Burghauser Junior Jazz Prize in 2015 , the International Jazz Competition Getxo in 2017 and the Biberach Jazz Prize in 2018 . He has already played with Carl Ludwig Hübsch , Frank Gratkowski, Hayden Chisholm , Marlies Debacker , Philip Zoubek , Etienne Nillesen , Sofia Jernberg , Sebastian Gramss , Matthias Schubert , Wolter Wierbos , Niels Klein , and many others.

Javaid's work ranges from interpreting works of new music through free improvisation to free jazz. In his improvisations, Javaid uses a wide range of sounds , including extended technique , jazz and classical saxophone technique / playing posture and sounds from the prepared saxophone.

He performs solo and in ad hoc formations and is also a permanent member of the Trio Abstract, Multiple Joy (ce) Orchestra , the Art Blau Ensemble, the Trio "Debacker / Hübsch / Javaid" and the free jazz quartet UCHRONIA. Concert tours have already taken him to England, China, the Czech Republic, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain and Austria.

He is a member of "IMPAKT, the young Cologne collective for current music" and also curator of the "Platform Non-Documentable Events" - a concert series for experimental music in Cologne in the studio of the artists Ulrike Geitel and Ulrich that has been led by Carl Ludwig Hübsch for over 15 years Dürrenfeld.
