Papa Bue's Viking Jazz Band
The Papa Bue's Viking Jazz Band is a Danish jazz formation that plays so-called hot jazz , especially Dixieland and New Orleans jazz .
The group was founded in 1956 by trombonist Arne Bue Jensen (* May 8, 1930; † November 2, 2011), a former seaman. The founding members (Jensen, Svare, Petersen, Lindschouw, Seidelin and the trumpeter Hans Jørgen Larsen) played in the Copenhagen entertainment district Nyhavn and had an engagement in Hamburg (St. Pauli) in the summer of 1956. At the end of 1956, Gerhard Vohwinkel was in the band for two months and made the first recording with it for Storyville Records before he was expelled by the Danish immigration police.
At the end of 1957 the band was renamed the Viking Jazz Band after the American journalist Shel Silverstein heard the band at Cap Horn and published a positive review of the Danish Vikings . At around the same time, trumpeter Finn Otto Hansen joined the band after the trumpeters had changed constantly. At that time, the members of the group couldn't make a living from music: Jensen worked in a shoe factory, Svare studied classical languages, Hansen trained as a blacksmith, Lindschouw was a courier, Seidelin was a mechanical engineer and Liller Petersen was a worker.
In 1958 they recorded the first album at Storyville as Papa Bue's Viking Jazz Band ( Papa Bue's Viking Jazz Band , Storyville SEP 367). It landed its first big success in 1960 with Schlafe mein Prinzchen ... This title was listed in the German charts for 44 weeks. Numerous gold records and many honors testify to the success story of the Danes. In 1996, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the band, a big gala concert took place in Tivoli in Copenhagen. From time to time the band was reassigned to a number of positions, but the band leader always made sure to maintain the band's soft, swinging, friendly-nostalgic sound. One of their stars from 1985 on was clarinetist John Defferary , who, however, switched to the Chris Barber Jazz & Blues Band in 1998 .
The band has a strong commercial and popular orientation and is not always accepted by jazz purists, but it has undoubtedly contributed to the fact that hot jazz, when jazz was generally in danger of disappearing into oblivion, was not completely forgotten. She also played the theme music ( Olsen-banden ) composed by Bent Fabricius-Bjerre for the 14 Danish films of the Olsen Gang and took part in the film music for Silent Days in Clichy .

Of the original members, Svare later founded his own band and Liller Petersen, who was popular as a singer, left the band several times and later pursued a solo career. From 1965 the pianist Jørn “Jønne” Jensen (leader of the Storyville Jazz Band in the 1950s) was a member.
The band played over time with George Lewis (with whom they toured and recorded multiple times in 1959), Earl Hines , Stuff Smith , Ben Webster , Wingy Manone , Edmond Hall , Champion Jack Dupree , Albert Nicholas , Art Hodes , Acker Bilk, among others , Gunhild Carling or Wild Bill Davison . The latter was a permanent member from 1975 to 1977. In 1969, after their appearance at the New Orleans Jazz Festival , the band was the only foreign band at the time to receive the city's Golden Keys. In 1972 she played at the Newport Jazz Festival . She toured most of the European countries, the Far East and Australia.
She released over 50 albums, including at Storyville Records and Timeless Records.
