Horacee Arnold

Horacee Arnold ( Horace Emanuel Arnold , born September 25, 1937 in Wayland / Kentucky ) is an American jazz drummer.

Arnold attended Los Angeles City College . On his return to Kentucky he played in Max Roach's band . In 1959 he became a member of Dave Baker's big band . After appearances with Rahsaan Roland Kirk and Charles Mingus , he became a member of the trio of Cecil McBee and Kirk Lightsey in 1960 . He also performed with Paul Bley , Carla Bley , Hassan Ibn Ali and Steve Swallow .

In the mid-1960s he worked with Henry Grimes and Bud Powell, and toured Asia with Alvin Ailey's group . From 1963 to 1965 he was a member of Hugh Masekela and Miriam Makeba's band . In the following year he studied composition with Hy Gubernick and Heiner Stadler and guitar with Ralph Towner .

In 1967 he founded The Here And Now Company , which he headed for three years and with u. a. Sam Rivers , Karl Berger , Joe Farrell and Robin Kenyatta performed. In 1969 he took part in Chick Corea's "Is" sessions ; In 1971 he became a member of his formation Return to Forever , two years later of the Stan Getz quartet . A grant from the Rockefell Foundation allowed him to work with his own quartet, which included Sam Rivers, Reggie Workman and David Friedman . With Archie Shepp he went on a tour of Japan in 1978.

Since the early 1980s, Arnold taught at William Paterson College of New Jersey . He worked with the Kenny Burrell Trio , led his own trio with Vic Juris and Stomu Takashi and performed in a duo with Will Calhoun .
