Yo soy Betty, la fea ( German : " I am Betty, the ugly ") is an internationally successful telenovela that was shot in Colombia from 1999 to 2001 under the direction of Mario Ribero Ferreira with a screenplay by Fernando Gaitán. The main roles were played by Ana María Orozco , Jorge Enrique Abello and Natalia Ramírez . There were 169 episodes in total.

The heroine, Beatriz Pinzón Solano, is an unattractive but intelligent woman with braces and thick glasses who works as a secretary for a fashion company and is constantly being ridiculed by her prettier colleagues. Eventually she makes a career, improves her looks, and begins a relationship with her boss.

The series is broadcast internationally, so that it already enjoys cult status in Serbia and Croatia, for example , and its own version called Ne daj se, Nina was produced.

The show was later continued with Eco moda (2001). The plot of the series served internationally as a template for several other television series, for example in Germany for Verliebt in Berlin , in the USA for the dramedy Alles Betty! (Ugly Betty) , in Spain for Yo soy Bea and in the Netherlands for Lotte .
