Internet Protocol Control Protocol

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Internet Protocol Control Protocol ( IPCP ) is a protocol that automatic configuration of computers used, typically over a dial-up connection such as analog - Modem , ISDN or DSL with a network connect.

When configuring via IPCP, the IP address , the default gateway and the DNS server of the dialing workstation are communicated. Furthermore, the compression algorithm could also be defined by IPCP, for example. As a result, IPCP works similarly to DHCP in Ethernet networks, but for dial-up connections (point-to-point connections).

Due to its function as NCP ( Network Control Protocol ) for the Internet Protocol (IP) over PPP . IPXCP stands analogously as NCP for IPX over PPP.

RFCs to IPCP

  • RFC 1332 - The PPP Internet Protocol Control Protocol (IPCP)
  • RFC 3241 / RFC 4815 - Extension: Robust Header Compression over PPP
