Discovery Channel is an English-speaking Canadian category A special-interest broadcaster headquartered in Toronto , Ontario . The station primarily broadcasts documentaries and reports from the fields of nature, adventure, research and science. The station is 80% owned by Bell Media and 20% by the US company Discovery Inc.

history

The operator of the station NetStar Communications Inc. began broadcasting operations on January 1, 1995. On October 24, 2000, the regulatory authority, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) , approved the 80 percent takeover of the station by CTV Inc. , 80% of which is owned by Bell Media and 20% by ESPN Inc.

Many programs are taken over by the US Discovery Channel, but some reports and documentaries are also produced in-house. The station broadcasts the daily scientific news program Daily Planet . Many of the imported US programs are broadcast somewhat laterally in Canada. The program The Deadliest Catch z. B. aired a month later than the United States.

Discovery Channel HD

On June 17, 2011, Bell Media announced that Discovery Channel would also be broadcast on HDTV in parallel to the normal standard format. The Discovery Channel HDTV began broadcasting two months later, on August 18, 2011.

The transmitter is fed into the digital cable network by several cable network operators. The station can therefore be received almost nationwide. The station can also be received via satellite through Bell TV and Shaw Direct. Can also be received through IPTV from Bell Fibe TV, Bell Aliant , MTS , Optik TV (in Alberta, British Columbia, Quebec), and SaskTel .
