Lindern (Oldenburg) is a municipality in the district of Cloppenburg in Lower Saxony . Lindern had 5085 inhabitants in July 2018 and covers an area of 65.81 square kilometers.

Geographical location
Lindern is a municipality in the southwest of the district of Cloppenburg in the Oldenburger Münsterland . It lies on the border with the Emsland . In addition, Lindern is part of the Hasetal recreation area .

history
People lived in the Lindern area as early as 5000 years ago. Several large stone graves still bear witness to this in the community. For the first time, Lindern is mentioned in writing in a deed of donation to the Corvey monastery from around 891-1037. There the place was still called Lindduri . Further documentary mentions can be dated to the 11th century.
The name Lindduri and the later name Lindern come from the old German terms linne and dere , which together means linden tree . This is also evident in the municipality's coat of arms. This tree dominated the village at that time.
A parish was built in Lindern around 1288 . This is seen as the foundation of the Lindern community. In the period from 1252 to 1400, the farmers were part of the county of Tecklenburg . After that they were owed to the bishopric of Münster .
At the time of the Reformation under Bishop Franz von Waldeck, Essen was dominated by Lutherans for around 70 years from 1543 to 1613. At that time, the Protestant reformer Hermann Bonnus worked in this region . In the course of the Counter Reformation under Bishop Ferdinand of Bavaria , the region was re-Catholicized.
From 1803 the villages are part of the Duchy of Oldenburg . From 1811 to 1813, Lindern belonged to the Arrondissement of Quakenbrück under Napoleonic rule . After the Battle of Leipzig it fell back to Oldenburg.
Cyclone of 1927
On June 1, 1927, 80 to 90 houses and 20 hectares of forest were destroyed in the Auen-Holthaus farming community by a hurricane with a strength of F4 on the Fujita scale . There were no dead.
Second World War
In World War II bombs were dropped on alleviating 1,943 for the first time. In 1944 three American planes were shot down. On April 12, 1945, the 4th Canadian Panzer Division fought with German soldiers on their way from Emsland towards Wilhelmshaven near Osterlimin. 19 farms were destroyed in Osterlinden and Hegel. There were no civilian deaths.
Incorporations
In 1933, the municipality of Lindern was added to the neighboring municipality of Lastrup as part of the administrative reform . It was not until 1948 that Lindern became independent again. In 1973, as in 1933, the municipality of Lindern was to be dissolved as part of a regional and administrative reform and added to the neighboring municipality of Lastrup. Due to strong protests by the population of Lindern, however, Lindern's independence was preserved.
Competition "Our village should be more beautiful"
The Auen-Holthaus farmers were awarded a silver medal in 1987 as the national winner of the competition Our village should be more beautiful .
Religions
The municipality of Lindern is located in the Catholic Oldenburger Münsterland. 3880 inhabitants, approx. 79%, are Catholic, 529 are Protestant (as of December 31, 2008). The Catholic Church in Lindern was founded in 1288. A bell from the Lindern church from 1416 is now in the museum village of Cloppenburg . The current parish church of St. Catherine of Siena was consecrated in 1865. The community belongs to the diocese of Münster . The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lindern belongs to the Lastrup parish. In addition, in Großenging, there is the Emmanuel Christian congregation , which belongs to the Federation of Free Church Pentecostal congregations .
Population development
The oldest indication of the inhabitants from 1473 comes from the tax register of the Cloppenburg office. In 1703 the civil status was determined in a census by the Cloppenburg office.

The council of the municipality of Lindern consists of 14 council women and councilors. This is the specified number for a municipality with a population between 3001 and 5000 inhabitants. The 14 council members are elected for five years each by local elections. The current term of office began on November 1, 2016 and ends on October 31, 2021.
The full-time mayor Karsten Hage (CDU) is also entitled to vote in the municipal council.

The full-time mayor of the municipality of Lindern is Karsten Hage ( CDU ). In the last mayoral election on May 25, 2014, he was elected unopposed candidate with 89.4% of the vote. The turnout was 57.0%. Hage took up his post on November 1, 2014, replacing the previous incumbent Rainer Rauch (CDU), who was no longer a candidate.

Culture and sights
The Lindern Gallery shows pictures and sculptures by various artists. In addition, the Lindern Culture Week takes place every 4 years . The next date is 2019.
Museums
The "Dörps- und Buernstowen" in Liener shows life and work in the village. The wooden shoemaker's shop is still employed today for demonstrations. The museum mainly shows the small ancillary trades that ensured survival in the past.
Buildings
Hermelings Mühle in Liener is still a working windmill. It was built in 1872. It was restored in the 1990s so it is still in good condition today. In 2000 a bakery was built next to the mill. With the expansion of the Lower Saxony Mühlenstraße to include the Oldenburger Münsterland in 2008, the mill became a station on Mühlenstraße.
The church of St. Catherine of Siena is the focal point in Lindern. The church was built in the middle of the 19th century.
The watchmaker's workshop of the Lindern watchmaker Büter is located in a half-timbered building on the market square. This was previously located elsewhere and was built here based on its model.
Cultural monuments
There are several large stone graves in the municipality, which testify to early settlement of the municipality. These are part of the street of the megalithic culture . From north to south the Schlingsteine ( Sprockhoff No. 961), a stone box (only discovered in 1961/1962), the large stone grave Hünensteine am Herrenwald (Sprockhoff No. 962) as well as the large stone graves in Garen , namely "The High Stone" ( Sprockhoff No. 963) and “Am Hohen Stein” (Sprockhoff No. 964).
Tourism routes
In addition to the street of megalithic culture and the Lower Saxony Mühlenstraße, Lindern is on the pit stop route , a cycling route through the Oldenburger Münsterland, and the Lower Saxony asparagus route .
Regular events
In March / April every year, the 1500 meter long avenue between Auen and Holthaus is lined on both sides by thousands of daffodils . On this occasion, the Easter flower festival is celebrated every year in Auen-Holthaus shortly after the start of spring.
The most popular events every year in Lindern include the shooting festival of the Lindern shooting club on Whitsun and the fair on the first weekend in October. The shooting festival in the Liener community in July and the shooting festival organized by the Garen-Marren shooting club on the third weekend in June are also very popular.
For children of the community, among other things, the camps of the altar boys and boy scouts that take place during the summer holidays are among the special highlights.
Economy and Infrastructure
The municipality of Lindern is strongly influenced by agriculture. 5200 ha, almost 80%, of the community area is used for agriculture. Most of the businesses are located in the surrounding farmers. There are therefore several food processing companies in Lindern and the surrounding communities. The plants grown are used, among other things, as feed for animal husbandry and for energy generation in biogas plants .
