Helen Gallagher

Helen Gallagher (born July 19, 1926 in New York City ) is an American actress , dancer and singer , who became famous for her roles on Broadway . She is a two-time Tony Award winner and a three-time Daytime Emmy Award winner .

Life

Helen Gallagher was born in Brooklyn , New York in 1926 . She grew up in Scarsdale before her family had to move to the Bronx after Black Sunday in 1929 . After their parents separated, Gallagher grew up with her aunt.

Helen Gallagher began her career as an actress in 1944. After appearing in smaller New York theaters, she received her first role offers on Broadway that same year. Among other things, she was seen in the 1947 world premiere of the musical Brigadoon at the Ziegfeld Theater. In 1952, Gallagher played the role of Gladys in Pal Joey , for which she received a Tony Award in the same year for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical . In 1966 Gallagher was nominated for another Tony Award for her role as Nickie in the world premiere of Sweet Charity , but lost to Beatrice Arthur . In 1971 she received her second Tony Award for her role in the musical No, No, Nanette .

In addition to her stage career, Gallagher has also appeared regularly as a guest actor in television series and shows since 1949. From 1975 to 1989 she was part of the regular cast of the soap opera Ryan's Hope in her role as Maeve Ryan . Gallagher received the Daytime Emmy Award for Best Actress in 1976, 1977 and 1988 for her performance. From 1997 to 1998 she played the role of Dr. Maud Boylan in six episodes of the soap opera Love, Lie, Passion . In addition, Gallagher was seen in several films. Among other things, she played the supporting role of Betty Anders in the drama Strangers When We Meet in 1960 . Gallagher is still active as an actress at the New York Theater House Herbert Berghof Studio .

Helen Gallagher was married to Frank Wise. The marriage remained childless and was divorced in 1958.
