Walter Slaje

Walter Slaje (born June 17, 1954 in Graz ) is an Austrian Indologist .

From 1984 to 1995, Slaje worked at the University Library in Graz as a specialist in oriental languages ​​and cultures and as head of the collection of scientific papers. The study of the subjects of Indology, Tibetology and Buddhist Studies was decided in 1983 at the University of Vienna with a doctorate. After a stay as an Alexander von Humboldt research fellow at the University of Hamburg (1989–1991), he completed his habilitation in Indology at the University of Vienna in 1993. In the same year he was awarded the Cardinal Innitzer Prize for the Humanities . From October 1995 until his retirement in September 2019, he taught as a university professor for Indology at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . In 2000 he was elected to the board of directors of the Helmuth von Glasenapp Foundation (Mainz), which he has been chairman of since 2020. In 2001 he became an expert on the Indological Commission at the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz, member of the commission since 2003, from January 1, 2011 until it was transferred to the joint subject group commission "Non-European Languages ​​and Cultures" (2016), he remained its chairman . On June 21, 2002, he was elected a corresponding member, and on November 5, 2010, a full member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz . Until its dissolution (2020) he was director of the department for historiography and intellectual culture of Kashmir of the Academy of Sciences and Literature (Mainz) established at the University of Halle. For the period of office from 2010 to 2011 he was elected 1st managing director, for the periods 2012 to 2014, 2015 to 2017 and from 2018 to 2020 1st chairman of the Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft (DMG). From 1998 to 2009 he worked as a section editor (Indology and Tibetology) of the magazine of the German Oriental Society (ZDMG).
