The Giant (Original Title: An Eye for an Eye ) is an American action film directed by Steve Carver from 1981 with Chuck Norris in the leading role of Sean Kane.

action

Sean Kane (Chuck Norris) and his friend Dave "David" Pierce are police officers in San Francisco on a secret assignment after drug dealers. When they are ambushed, they are shot at and Dave is badly wounded and eventually crushed by a car. Sean comforts the grieving widow and television reporter Linda and resigns from the police force.

Linda does research and calls Sean when gangsters chase her on the subway. She had found a clue to the murderers. She escapes home and calls Sean again from there when the gangsters break open the door. When Sean reaches her apartment, Linda is dead.

Together with a Japanese master and Heather Sullivan, a colleague of Linda with whom he falls in love, he fights against the drug gang. The colleague finds the evidence that Linda left behind and listens to the tape on the TV station. However, the boss of the TV station is the drug lord. Finally, Sean and his Japanese friend manage to arrest this and the other gangsters with the help of the police.

background

Production costs were around $ 4.5 million.

The shooting took place from January 1981 to the beginning of February of the same year in San Francisco . The film grossed around $ 8 million at the US box office.

Director Steve Carver turned McQuade, the Wolf , who again starred Chuck Norris in 1983 .

Although The Giant was not a successful film, a few more followed according to a similar plot: a police officer against the mafia and his own corrupt colleagues. Steven Seagal stars in most of these films , including Deadly Revenge , in which he messes with a drug gang to kill his partner. A similar plot pattern is also used in Black Rain with Michael Douglas , with influences from the crime film being noticeable here. Films such as Exit Wounds , Nico and Street Kings with Keanu Reeves were also made . The giant also includes elements that are used in Walker, Texas Ranger with Chuck Norris.

criticism

“After the tenth fight at the latest, you get tired of the stupid spectacle that flattens all the stereotypes of the martial arts genre. It's a shame about popular actors like Christopher Lee [...] or Richard Roundtree [...]. "
