action

Rocky, Alex and Money are three petty criminals who live in Detroit and earn their living by breaking into houses together and selling the stolen goods afterwards. Since Alex's father runs a security company, the security systems in the houses are no problem for her. Rocky dreams of moving to California with her little sister Diddy to escape their abusive mother and her alcoholic boyfriend. You get a tip, after which the house of a blind veterans a sum of 300,000 US dollars is to be located. He received the money as compensation after a woman named Cindy Roberts accidentally ran over his daughter several years ago. Rocky, Alex and Money plan to break into the house at night to snag the money.

On the evening of the break-in, they give the old man's dog a drug, which causes him to pass out. Rocky smashes a small window pane and so the three of them get into the house. There they look in vain for the cash until they come to a locked door, behind which they suspect the money. Money shoots the door lock, waking the blind veteran. Despite his visual impairment, he recognizes the situation, skillfully steals Money's pistol and shoots him with it. Rocky panics and hides in a closet from which she can watch the blind man. She sees him open a hidden safe and check his cash balance. After the old man leaves the room, Alex and Rocky take the money and try to escape.

They get through a door into the cellar of the house, where they find a tied and gagged woman in a kind of self-made soft cell . The woman turns out to be Cindy Roberts, who ran over the man's daughter years ago, and is freed by Alex and Rocky. The three now try to leave the house together, but are again surprised by the blind man. He shoots Alex and Rocky with Moneys pistol, but accidentally hits Cindy. Rocky and Alex then flee into the basement. When the blind man realizes that instead of the intruder, he has killed his prisoner, he is furious and turns off the electricity in the cellar. Alex manages to hit the man disoriented with one blow, whereupon he and Rocky quickly leave the basement.

They quickly notice that all exits to the house are blocked and instead try to escape via the ventilation system. Meanwhile, the dog has woken up again and attacks Alex. The blind man uses this opportunity to overpower Alex and drag him into a storage room. Rocky is also chased through the ducts of the ventilation system by the dog and caught by the man a short time later.

Rocky wakes up in the basement of the house, where the blind man finally explains that Cindy was pregnant with his child. He got Cindy pregnant because she killed his only daughter. Since Cindy is now also dead, it is Rocky who now owes him a child. The man tries to fertilize Rocky artificially , but is overwhelmed and handcuffed by Alex at the last moment.

Since their blood is all over the house, Rocky and Alex do not want to alert the police and try again to escape through the front door of the house. In the meantime, however, the blind man is able to free himself from the handcuffs and shoots Alex while Rocky runs to her car. She is chased by the man's dog again, but manages to lock it in the trunk of the car. At that moment the blind man attacks her again, overpowers her and drags her back into the house. Once in the house, however, she can distract him by triggering the alarm system in the house. She grabs a crowbar and beats the disoriented man until he collapses unconscious. Rocky then escapes shortly before the police arrive at the man's house.

With the looted money, Rocky now plans to leave Detroit and travel to Los Angeles with Diddy . Shortly before boarding a train to Los Angeles, she saw on the news that the blind man is now out of danger and has not told the authorities about Rocky or the stolen money.

background

Director Fede Alvarez stated that he relied heavily on the criticism of his previous horror film Evil Dead (2013) in making Don't Breathe a reality . Accordingly, viewers at Evil Dead criticized the excessive use of film blood and the fact that the film was only intended to "shock" the audience. In Don't Breathe , Alvarez tried to take this criticism to heart and make the film more exciting than shocking.

Filming began on June 29, 2015. Although the film is set in the US city of Detroit , it was shot primarily in Hungary . Only close-ups of the city were taken on site in Detroit.

The film premiered on March 12, 2016 at South by Southwest with a budget of just under ten million US dollars . The revenues in the USA amounted to around 89.2 million, worldwide more than 157 million US dollars could be brought in. Don't Breathe was released in North America on August 26, 2016, and the German theatrical release was on September 8, 2016.

A continuation is planned for 2019.
