Comedies
Comedies take up much of Shakespeare's work. In addition to plays such as The Merchant of Venice , Much Ado About Nothing and A Midsummer Night's Dream, they also include more difficult to classify, sometimes tragic dramas (so-called problem plays ) such as B. Troilus and Cressida and all's well that ends well . The third category within Shakespeare's comedies are the romances (including the late works Cymbeline and The Tempest ).

Histories
Although real people from contemporary history (Macbeth, Julius Caesar and Cleopatra) are the focus of many of Shakespeare's plays, the pieces are usually referred to as historical dramas (or histories ) that were classified accordingly in the first folio edition of 1623: King John , Richard II. , Heinrich IV. (Two parts) and Heinrich the Fifth , Heinrich VI. (three parts), Richard III. , Henry VIII. Edward III. whose authorship has not been established beyond doubt, is also attributed to Shakespeare.
These pieces cover the history of England from the 12th to the 16th centuries and are named after the respective monarch who ruled the English kingdom at the time.
