Basil Sydney (born April 23, 1894 in St. Osyth , Essex , England , † January 10, 1968 in London ) was a British theater and film actor .

Life

At the age of 15, Basil Sydney appeared as an actor on the theater stages in England. His breakthrough came in 1915 in a London performance of Edward Sheldon's play Romance at the side of Doris Keane (1881-1945), whom he married in 1918 after his military service in World War I and with whom he played in a US silent film version of 1920 Piece made his screen debut. In 1921 Sydney and Keane appeared in Romance on New York's Broadway , where Sydney was often seen in Shakespeare plays during the 1920s , including Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet , the title role of Hamlet and Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew .

In 1925 he divorced Keane. After marrying actress Mary Ellis in 1929, he focused more on his film career. Over the years he has appeared in almost 50 films, including Claudius in Laurence Olivier's Hamlet (1948), Waldemar Fitzurse in Ivanhoe - The Black Knight (1952) alongside Robert Taylor and Elizabeth Taylor , as Pontius Pilatus in Salome ( 1953) with Rita Hayworth and Stewart Granger and in the star-cast film Around the World in 80 Days (1956).

When his second marriage to Mary Ellis failed, Sydney stepped in front of the aisle with actress Joyce Howard. They had three children together. This relationship also ended in a divorce. Sydney died of pleurisy in London in 1968 at the age of 73 .
