Helene Costello (born June 21, 1906 in New York City , New York , † January 26, 1957 in San Bernardino , California ) was an American actress .

Career

Helene Costello was the daughter of the then well-known stage actor Maurice Costello , who himself had a successful career in film and thus brought his daughter into the film business. Together with her older sister Dolores Costello and her father, Helene made her screen debut in 1909 in one of the first film versions of A Midsummer Night's Dream . In the following years she played as a child actress in several productions, but after the divorce of her parents, Helene could not be seen in the cinema for a decade. In 1924 she and her sister enjoyed great success in a joint dance number in the George White's Scandals of 1924 . Success earned the sisters each contract with the Warner Brothers company and the move to Hollywood . In contrast to her sister, Helene only had a moderately successful career. Like her sister the year before, Helene Costello was named one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars in 1927 .

Her greatest success was her appearance in Lights of New York in 1928, which was the first "real" sound film to consist only of dialogues. But the sound film itself brought Costello a serious career break, so that she only received sporadic supporting roles from the early 1930s.

Helene Costello was married four times:

  1. 1927–1928 with John W. Regan
  2. 1930–1932 with Lowell Sherman
  3. 1933–1939 with Arturo Del Barrio
  4. 1940–1948 with George Le Blanc, with whom she had a daughter

She had repeatedly struggled with alcohol and drug problems and died in 1957 at Patton State Hospital in San Bernardino at the age of only 50 from complications from a long-standing tuberculosis disease; she was buried in the Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles.

On February 8, 1960, she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1500 Vine Street.
