Svend Lauritz Gade (born February 9, 1877 in Copenhagen , † June 25, 1952 in Aarhus ) was a Danish director , set designer , screenwriter and set designer .

Life

After training as a theater painter, Gade worked at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen from 1905. With plays by Strindberg he had guest appearances in several countries, including from 1908 in Berlin, where he was influenced by Max Reinhardt's directorial work and Hugo Baruch's sets .

He made his film debut as a screenwriter in Denmark in 1916 with The Maharaja's Favorite Wife . But Gade's first significant film work was the German production Hamlet from 1921, in which his compatriot Asta Nielsen took over the title role. From 1922 to 1929 Svend Gade worked in all of his professions in the USA, including as film architect in 1923 for Ernst Lubitsch's Rosita . In this function he was on the way through the night of Robert Dinesen involved, one of the last German silent films from 1929.

With the start of the sound film era, from 1930 to 1937, Svend Gade was again exclusively active as a director at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen, where he directed Shakespeare, Strindberg and Brecht. His only sound film direction was in 1938 Das Ballett tanzt .
