Innokenty smoktunovsky ( Russian Иннокентий Михайлович Смоктуновский ., Scientific transliteration Innokentij Michajlovič Smoktunovskij born Smoktunowitsch * 18th March 1925 in Tatjanowka, Tomsk Governorate , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ; † 3. August 1994 in Moscow ) was a Soviet actor .

Life

Smoktunowski's ancestors say they were Belarusians. His grandfather was a hunter in the Białowieża jungle , in 1861 he is said to have killed a bison , for which he and his family were exiled to Siberia as a punishment .

Innokenti Smoktunowski took part in the Second World War as a member of the Red Army , was taken prisoner near Kiev, where, after a month, he managed to escape from one concentration camp to another. After that, a Ukrainian family hid him for a month, after which he joined partisans . He experienced the end of the war near Grevesmühlen .

His acting career began in 1946 at the Norilsk (Siberia) and Krasnoyarsk theaters . Later he went to Moscow and Leningrad , where he played under the direction of Georgi Towstonogow at the Bolshoi Drama Theater . From 1972 he worked at the Maly Theater , from 1976 at the Moscow Art Theater .

He began his film career in Mikhail Romm's film Ubijstwo na ulize Dante (1956) and in Soldaty (1956) by Alexander Ivanov . He also starred in the film Nine Days of a Year (1962), which was also directed by Michail Romm. He became internationally known in the title role of Grigori Kosinzew's Hamlet (1964). For his portrayal of the composer in Igor Talankins Tchaikovsky (1969) he was awarded the Acting Prize at the San Sebastián Film Festival.

In the fairy tale film The Princess and the Pea from 1977, Smoktunowski played the king.

Smoktunowski was a private friend of the actor Georgi Schschonow , with whom he appeared in Eldar Ryazanov's 1966 comedy Beregis Awtomobilja (German: Caution, car thief! ).

In 1974 he was honored with the title People's Artist of the USSR (Народный артист СССР) and in 1990 with the title Hero of Socialist Labor (Герой Социалистического Труда).
